Baked Beans July Classic — Homemade: 5 Steps to Delight

Ingredients

  • 2 cups navy beans, soaked overnight
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Drain and rinse the soaked beans.
  3. In a large pot, combine beans, water, and onion. Boil for 30 minutes.
  4. Drain the beans and return them to the pot.
  5. Add brown sugar, molasses, ketchup, mustard, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish.
  7. Cover and bake for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  8. Remove the cover for the last 30 minutes to thicken the sauce.

Notes

  • For a smoky flavor, add diced bacon or ham.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less sugar.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
